In a remarkable display of unity and support for development, the Muslim community in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, voluntarily demolished a 168-year-old mosque to facilitate the construction of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The decision was made after discussions with district officials, highlighting the community’s commitment to progress and infrastructure development.
Meerut City’s Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Brijesh Kumar Singh confirmed that the mosque’s management and local residents cooperated with authorities to clear the path for the crucial transport project. “There was no confrontation, and the mosque committee worked closely with us. We are now finalizing the compensation process,” he stated.
To minimize disruptions, the demolition was carried out at night in the presence of NCRTC and police officials. The mosque, originally built in 1857 and briefly sealed in 1981 due to legal issues, had remained functional until recent government orders facilitated its removal.
