Maharashtra’s political scene has been set abuzz with controversy following Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray’s recent remarks targeting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The friction emerged after Shinde hosted a slew of Bollywood celebrities and sports personalities at his residence for Ganpati festival celebrations, marking what is believed to be a first for such a high-profile gathering during the festival.
The photos and videos of these celebrities participating in Ganeshotsav at Shinde’s residence quickly went viral, prompting a wave of political reactions. Thackeray, who represents the Worli constituency in Mumbai, took to social media to criticize the Chief Minister, alleging that Shinde’s focus on celebrity photo ops was distracting him from pressing governance issues.
“Instead of addressing the crumbling law and order situation in Maharashtra, the illegal and shameless CM is busy with his own photo obsession,” Thackeray posted on his ‘X’ handle. He accused Shinde of neglecting the state’s administrative duties while indulging in public displays for personal gain. “No fear of law,” Thackeray added.
Thackeray’s comments were further pointed at Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, accusing him of engaging in “dirty politics” rather than addressing real issues.
The criticism was met with a sharp rebuttal from Rahul Kanal, a former close aide of Thackeray who has since aligned himself with Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction. Kanal’s response was both scathing and defensive, accusing Thackeray of disrespecting Maharashtra’s cultural values and the principles of constructive politics.
“Your language shows your character. If you think your elders could also be addressed in the same fashion, then go ahead. It is all about perception. You can have your view and reality could be different,” Kanal stated, emphasizing the need for respectful and constructive political discourse.
The exchange of barbs comes in the wake of a distressing news report involving a rape case of a minor girl in Nagpur, which has intensified scrutiny on the state government’s handling of law and order. Thackeray’s comments seemed to be a direct response to the growing concerns over such incidents, suggesting that Shinde’s public engagements were detracting from critical administrative responsibilities.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the debate over the priorities and actions of Maharashtra’s leaders remains a focal point, reflecting deeper divides and ongoing tensions within the state’s political arena.
