A fresh controversy has erupted within the Shiv Sena (UBT) as its MPs in the national capital face a dilemma over attending lunches and dinners hosted by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s MPs and ministers. Amid reports that six Sena (UBT) MPs may switch allegiance to Shinde’s faction, their participation in events organized by the rival camp has sparked speculation and internal discord.
During his visit to Delhi, Aaditya Thackeray reportedly advised Sena (UBT) MPs to avoid such gatherings or seek prior approval from the party. He warned that their presence at these events could fuel rumors of defections, as reported by Times of India.
However, some MPs have pushed back against this directive, arguing that attending events hosted by ministers from their home state is common practice in Delhi’s political circles. This week, three to four Sena (UBT) MPs were seen at functions hosted by Shinde Sena leaders, including an event by MP Shrikant Shinde.
Political observers note that dinner diplomacy is routine in Delhi, especially during Parliament sessions. They argue that restricting MPs from attending such interactions is neither practical nor beneficial. Some MPs were reportedly displeased when Aaditya Thackeray asked them to inform the party before attending meetings or gatherings with leaders from rival factions. They believe political rivalry should not interfere with their professional interactions.
The episode underscores the growing tensions within the Sena (UBT) as speculation over defections gains traction. While Aaditya Thackeray seeks to maintain party discipline and prevent internal fractures, MPs insist that attending cross-party events is a long-standing tradition in Delhi’s political landscape.
