In a dramatic gesture of self-punishment, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gopal Italia publicly flogged himself during a meeting in Surat, Gujarat, as a form of penance for what he described as his failure to ensure justice for victims of crimes under BJP rule. The incident, captured on video, has sparked widespread debate and media attention.

The Incident

Italia, who serves as the AAP’s national joint secretary, removed his belt during the public meeting and began whipping himself, citing the plight of a Patidar woman from Amreli who was recently arrested for allegedly attempting to defame a BJP leader. He described the act as an effort to “awaken the people of Gujarat from their slumber.”

“I have been fighting legal, social, and political battles for justice, but the corrupt nexus of officials and BJP leaders has made it impossible for victims to receive fairness,” Italia stated, according to PTI. He highlighted several tragedies in Gujarat, including the Morbi bridge collapse, Vadodara boat capsize, hooch tragedies, fire incidents, and government exam paper leaks, as examples of systemic failures.

An Emotional Appeal

Before flogging himself, Italia declared, “I have been unable to ensure justice for victims, especially the innocent daughter of Amreli.” Leaders on stage rushed to stop him, but he continued, emphasizing his frustration and determination to highlight the issues plaguing Gujarat.

Later, in a video statement, Italia elaborated on his actions, saying, “I was deeply shocked while speaking about the Amreli incident. How is it possible that justice eludes everyone in Gujarat? BJP leaders make cruel statements, which is like rubbing salt on open wounds. I flogged myself for my inability to ensure justice.”

Background on the Amreli Case

The incident Italia referenced involved a Patidar woman who was arrested in Amreli for allegedly conspiring to defame a BJP MLA. The woman was granted bail last Friday. Italia criticized the government’s response, describing it as a gross misuse of power to silence dissent.
