Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday made a startling revelation, recalling his detention and alleged assault during the Congress government in Assam under the tenure of former Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia. Shah claimed that he was beaten up and had to survive on jail food for seven days while protesting against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Shah launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of preventing peace and development in Assam.
"I have also been beaten up by the Congress government in Assam. Hiteshwar Saikia was the Chief Minister of Assam, and we used to raise slogans against Indira Gandhi, calling her 'Khooni' (murderer). I had to eat jail food for seven days, and people from across the country stood up to save Assam. Today, Assam is moving ahead on the path of development," Shah said.
Saikia, who served as Assam’s Chief Minister from 1983 to 1985 and again from 1991 to 1996, led a Congress administration that Shah accused of failing to restore peace in the region.
Lachit Barphukan Academy to Become India’s Top Police Academy
During his address, Shah praised Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for renaming the police academy after Lachit Barphukan, a legendary Ahom general known for his victory against the Mughals.
"In the next five years, this police academy will become the best in the country. Today, the biography of Lachit Barphukan is being taught in 23 languages, inspiring students across India," Shah added.
Development Boom in Assam Under Modi Government
Highlighting the BJP-led government’s achievements, Shah noted that Assam’s conviction rate had risen from 5% to 25% in just three years and would soon surpass the national average.
He further announced that the Modi government is set to invest ₹3 lakh crore in infrastructure projects in Assam, adding to the ₹5 lakh crore proposed investment from the recent business summit.
