In a recent development, the Amreli District Collector in Gujarat, Ajay Dahiya, has taken action against two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors for violating the child limit law. The membership of these councillors has been terminated after they had a third child last year.
The decision was made in accordance with Section 11(1)(h) of the Gujarat Municipalities Act, which was added on August 4, 2005. This section renders individuals ineligible for membership of a municipality if their third child is born after they assume office as a member.
The councillors in question, Khima Kasotiya and Meghna Bokha, had two children when they were elected from Damnagar Municipality in the district. However, they had a third child each after assuming their roles as councillors. Khima Kasotiya's third child was born on May 10, 2023, while Meghna Bokha's third child was born on March 14, 2023.
The office of the Amreli District Collector issued an order on Monday, immediately disqualifying Khima Kasotiya and Meghna Bokha as councillors of the urban local body.
Upon being summoned by the District Collector, the Chief Officer presented birth certificates of the two children Kasotiya and Bokha had when they contested the election to the Damnagar civic body in 2021. These certificates confirmed that Kasotiya, a BJP councillor from Ward No.2, became a father for the third time, and Bokha, a BJP councillor from Ward No.3, became a mother for the third time.
