A Bangladesh court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of Hindu monk Chinmoy Das, a former member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), who has been in jail for the past 42 days in connection with a sedition case.
Chinmoy Das appeared before the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Saiful Islam amid tight security. After hearing arguments from both sides for around 30 minutes, the court denied the monk’s request for bail, said Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Advocate Mofizur Haque Bhuiyan, as reported by ANI.
Reacting to the decision, Kolkata ISKCON Vice President Radharaman Das expressed disappointment. “We were hopeful he would get bail today. He is a monk and has been in jail for 42 days. Moreover, we have heard his health is deteriorating. This is unfortunate, and we will look into why the judge rejected the bail,” he told PTI.
