The High Court Division of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on Thursday (November 28) rejected a petition seeking to ban the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in the country. The plea followed the death of a lawyer during a recent clash linked to the organization. The verdict was delivered by a bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury, according to local media reports.
The controversy stems from the actions of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON member who was recently expelled from the group. Das was arrested earlier this week on sedition charges for allegedly flying a religious flag above Bangladesh’s national flag at a religious congregation. His arrest has sparked protests that turned violent, resulting in the death of Saiful Islam, an assistant public prosecutor.
ISKCON has categorically distanced itself from Das, emphasizing his expulsion prior to his arrest. “We condemn any actions that disrespect national symbols and reiterate our commitment to peaceful religious practices,” the organization stated.
Das, however, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), despite the volatile situation in Bangladesh. His post read: “Justice has prevailed. My faith remains unshaken.”
The unrest in Bangladesh continues to escalate following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure and alleged flight to India. Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, now at the helm of the interim government, faces criticism for failing to curb violence against minority communities, including Hindus.
India has expressed “deep concern” over the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh. A statement from New Delhi underscored the importance of protecting minority rights and ensuring stability in the neighboring nation.
