In the wake of the West Bengal Assembly’s recent passage of an anti-rape bill, BJP leader Dr. Anirban Ganguly has sharply criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling her actions and statements “laughable” and demanding her resignation.

Dr. Ganguly’s comments came in response to Banerjee’s call for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several BJP-ruled state Chief Ministers. During the assembly session, Banerjee had urged these leaders to step down, alleging their failure to address key issues.

Dr. Ganguly dismissed Banerjee’s demands as a diversion from her own administration’s shortcomings. “I think it is laughable that yesterday on the floor of the assembly, Mamata Banerjee, whose resignation the entire state is demanding, called for the resignation of Prime Minister, Home Minister, Health Minister, and other BJP-ruled state CMs,” he stated. “She is perhaps losing her mental balance under pressure and stress.”

The BJP leader pointed to a May 2021 letter from Union Minister Kiren Rijiju to Banerjee, which outlined the central government’s provisions for establishing special fast-track and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) courts in West Bengal. Rijiju’s letter emphasized that the Centre would fully fund these initiatives, aiming to address the backlog of pending cases in the state.

Dr. Ganguly accused Banerjee of ignoring the letter and failing to implement the central government’s offer to set up 123 special courts across West Bengal. He criticized her for not taking action, stating, “The fact is, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s letter clearly told her that the Centre has developed the provisions of special fast-track courts and POCSO courts, and that West Bengal has to set up 123 special courts in every district. Not only did Mamata Banerjee not respond to that letter, but she also didn’t have the minimum decency and courtesy to follow up on setting up these courts.”

In a scathing remark, Dr. Ganguly concluded that Banerjee had deceived the people of West Bengal and the country, asserting, “Mamata Banerjee has taken Bengalis, West Bengal, the entire country for a ride…She must resign.”

The heated exchange highlights the growing political tensions in West Bengal, with the anti-rape bill serving as the latest battleground in the clash between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP.
