In a recent update on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and BJP Member of Parliament, provided key insights into the review process for the proposed legislation. Speaking at a press briefing, Pal emphasized the committee’s commitment to a thorough and inclusive examination of the bill.
“We had said in the first meeting also that if the government has referred the Waqf Amendment 2024 to the JPC, then we will call as many Waqf boards of the country as possible,” Pal stated. “We will also call those who are part of our minority organizations.”
The Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 aims to address several critical issues concerning the management and governance of Waqf properties in India. Pal highlighted the government’s objective of introducing a more effective and refined block amendment bill, which seeks to enhance transparency and accountability in Waqf administration.
As part of the comprehensive review process, the JPC will engage with various stakeholders, including prominent Waqf boards and minority organizations. Pal confirmed that the committee has already extended invitations to several key figures and organizations for their input. “All India Sunni Jamiatul, All India Muslim Civil Liberties ex-MP Deep Sahab has been called, and two Sunni Waqf Boards of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have also been called,” he noted.
The JPC’s approach reflects a broad and inclusive strategy to ensure that the Waqf Amendment Bill addresses the concerns of all relevant parties and meets the intended objectives of the legislation. By soliciting feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, the committee aims to craft a bill that is both effective and equitable.
The Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 is expected to play a significant role in reforming the management of Waqf properties, enhancing governance structures, and ensuring that the benefits of these properties are maximized for the communities they serve. The JPC’s efforts to involve diverse perspectives underscore the importance of a collaborative approach in shaping legislation that impacts a wide array of stakeholders.
