In a major legal setback, Abbas Ansari, MLA from Mau Sadar and son of incarcerated gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been convicted in a hate speech case by the MP-MLA court in Mau. The case relates to provocative remarks made during the high-voltage Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2022.
Alongside his brother Mansoor Ansari, Abbas Ansari was found guilty of making inflammatory statements aimed at government officials. The court sentenced him to two years in jail and imposed a fine of ₹2,000.
The controversy dates back to the 2022 election campaign when Abbas, representing the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) in alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP), had sparked outrage with a public threat. He allegedly declared that once his party came to power, officials who had harassed people would be "settled with."
His speech caused an uproar, drawing swift action from the Election Commission, which banned him from campaigning for 24 hours. The remarks were widely condemned across political circles, raising concerns over hate speech and electoral conduct.
Despite the controversy, Abbas Ansari went on to win the Mau Sadar seat in 2022, marking his debut in electoral politics. However, the alliance dynamics shifted post-election, as SBSP distanced itself from SP and aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The conviction poses a serious threat to Abbas Ansari’s political career. Under the Representation of the People Act, any elected representative sentenced to two years or more faces disqualification from public office, although this depends on the outcome of any appeals.
