BMC Unveils Record Budget of Rs 74,427 Crore For 2025-26, Aiming For Major Infrastructure, Healthcare, And Environmental Improvements

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has presented its highest-ever budget of Rs 74,427 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26, marking a 14.19% increase from the previous year’s Rs 65,180 crore budget. This is the third consecutive year the budget has been presented under an administrator, as the corporators’ term ended in March 2022. The budget focuses on key sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental initiatives.

Highlights include:

  • Educational Upgrades: Rs 12 crore allocated for enhancing school furniture, including desks and benches, improving the learning environment.
  • Slum Business Tax: Rs 350 crore is expected to be generated by assessing 50,000 commercial establishments in slums for property tax to boost services and infrastructure.
  • Dahisar Check Naka Hub: A transportation and commercial hub with 456 bus parking spaces and 1,424 motor vehicle parking spaces to ease traffic congestion.
  • Gamified Learning: Expansion of gamified learning in schools, increasing the number of beneficiaries from 19,401 to 32,659 students.
  • Support for BEST: Rs 1,000 crore allocated as a grant for the BEST Undertaking, continuing support since 2012-13.
  • Worli Plot Auction: Auction of a Worli plot for private development to boost revenue.
  • Road & Traffic Infrastructure: Rs 5,100 crore allocated for road and traffic improvements.
  • Environmental Initiatives: Rs 113 crore for environment department projects.
  • Healthcare Expansion: Rs 100 crore provision for a Desalination Plant and expansion of free healthcare clinics, benefiting nearly 90 lakh patients so far.
