In a strategic move that has sparked political speculations, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal met with party chief Sharad Pawar at his residence on Monday. The meeting, coming just months ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, has intensified discussions about Bhujbal's potential political maneuvers.
Bhujbal, a key figure within the NCP and among the 40 MLAs who switched sides last year, had been eyeing a significant political role. His ambitions were underscored by his desire to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Nashik in 2024, a seat currently held by Eknath Shinde?s Shiv Sena. However, recent developments and his meeting with Sharad Pawar indicate a potential shift in his political strategy.
Notably, Bhujbal's wife, Sunetra Pawar, who contested and lost in the general elections from Baramati, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha. This move underscores the family's continued engagement in state and national politics.
Following his meeting with Sharad Pawar, Bhujbal addressed the media, emphasizing that the discussion did not revolve around his ministerial or MLA roles. Instead, the focus was on crucial issues affecting Maharashtra, particularly concerning OBC (Other Backward Classes) reservations.
"We discussed the OBC reservation issue extensively. There is tension among communities, and it is essential to address this," Bhujbal stated, reflecting on the urgency of the matter.
Sharad Pawar, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, assured Bhujbal that he would engage with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on the matter shortly. "I will speak to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the next one or two days to discuss the reservation issue," Pawar affirmed, highlighting his commitment to resolving community tensions.
Bhujbal also revealed that he had consulted with Praful Patel before visiting Sharad Pawar, indicating collaborative efforts within the NCP to navigate upcoming political challenges.
As Maharashtra braces for the Assembly elections, scheduled to take place in the coming months, Bhujbal's meeting with Sharad Pawar adds a layer of intrigue to the state's political landscape. The outcome of these deliberations and Bhujbal's subsequent actions are anticipated to shape political alliances and strategies in the run-up to the polls, influencing the dynamics of governance in the state.
