In a significant move to restore the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Maharashtra state government has contracted Ram Sutar Art Creations to construct a new statue in Sindhudurg, following the collapse of the previous statue on August 26. Renowned for its monumental work, including the Statue of Unity dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, this firm, led by Anil Ram Sutar, is tasked with creating a tribute that far exceeds the height of the original.
The new statue will soar to 60 feet, a marked increase from the previous statue’s height of 33 feet. This decision comes after the initial statue, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4, 2023, just nine months prior to its collapse, faced scrutiny and embarrassment for both the state and central governments. Investigations revealed that the earlier structure suffered from corrosion, a weak frame, and inadequate welding, prompting a thorough review of its construction.
Manisha Mhaiskar, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD), confirmed to Hindustan Times that Ram Sutar Art Creations has been selected for the project. The state government has allocated Rs 20 crore for this endeavor, with a commitment that the new statue will last for at least 100 years. The builder will also be responsible for its maintenance for the first decade to ensure durability and safety.
In response to the collapse, two committees were established: one to investigate the cause of the failure and another, overseen by Mhaiskar, to ensure the successful construction of the new statue. This initiative aims not only to restore the honor associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji but also to reaffirm Maharashtra’s cultural pride in its historical figures.
With increased oversight and a focus on structural integrity, the state government is determined that this new statue will stand the test of time, serving as a lasting tribute to Shivaji Maharaj and reflecting the state’s rich cultural heritage. As the project unfolds, the government hopes to mend the reputation associated with such monumental tributes and instill pride among the people of Maharashtra.
