Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud spoke candidly about the political uproar following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to his residence for Ganesh Puja during an event hosted by the Marathi daily Loksatta. He clarified that no judicial matters are discussed in such informal meetings, emphasizing that these gatherings are standard practice for chief ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts.

CJI Chandrachud noted, “People often wonder why these meetings occur. The maturity of our political system is evident in the deference shown to the judiciary by the political class.” He highlighted the importance of these interactions, particularly regarding budget allocations, which are essential for judicial infrastructure. “The judiciary’s budget comes from the state, not for the judges personally. New court buildings and residences in districts require dialogue between the Chief Justice and the Chief Minister,” he added.

The controversy erupted after PM Modi attended the Ganesh Puja at CJI Chandrachud’s residence on September 10, provoking criticism from the Congress party, which labeled the visit as inappropriate. In response to the visit, PM Modi shared a message on X, saying, “Joined Ganesh Puja at the residence of CJI, Justice DY Chandrachud Ji. May Bhagwan Shri Ganesh bless us all with happiness, prosperity, and wonderful health.”

In addition to addressing the visit, CJI Chandrachud discussed the collegium system of appointing judges to the Supreme Court and High Courts. He stated, “Every institution can be improved, but that shouldn’t lead to the conclusion that there is something fundamentally wrong with it.” He emphasized that the collegium system reflects a federal structure, with responsibilities distributed among various levels of government, both at the Centre and the states, alongside the judiciary.

CJI Chandrachud’s remarks seek to clarify the purpose of his meeting with PM Modi and to reinforce the importance of cooperation between the judiciary and the executive in ensuring the effective functioning of the legal system.
