A series of rain-related tragedies struck Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, leaving at least ten people dead and several others missing after a cloudburst in Ramban and a devastating landslide in Reasi district.

In Ramban, a sudden cloudburst in the mountainous Rajgarh area unleashed flash floods that swept through homes and fields. Three people lost their lives in the incident, while two others remain unaccounted for. Officials confirmed that several houses were damaged as gushing waters wreaked havoc nearly 25 kilometres from the district headquarters. Search and rescue teams have been deployed to locate the missing.

Meanwhile, in Reasi’s Badder village of Mahore, a massive landslide buried a family, killing seven members. The incident occurred early in the morning, catching residents off guard. Authorities rushed to the spot, but heavy rains and unstable terrain slowed down the rescue operation.

The twin tragedies come as Jammu and Kashmir reels under relentless monsoon rains. Over the past week, the region has witnessed widespread devastation. In Jammu, nearly 45 people have lost their lives in separate incidents of flooding and landslides, including a major mishap on the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route at Adhkunwari on August 26, where about 35 pilgrims perished in a landslide.

Relief and rehabilitation efforts are underway on a war footing. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh visited flood-affected stretches of the Udhampur highway to take stock of the situation, while Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary toured parts of Jammu to oversee rescue operations. According to official figures, more than 12,000 residents have been evacuated to safer locations since the downpour began.
