On Monday, Congress released its candidate list for the upcoming Assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, naming two candidates for Jharkhand and four for Maharashtra. These elections are critical for Congress as it seeks to bolster its presence in both states.

Congress Candidates for Jharkhand

The Congress has selected:

  • Sweta Singh for the Bokaro constituency
  • Ajay Dubet for Dhanbad

Congress Candidates for Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, where the contest is particularly intense, Congress has nominated:

  • Sajid Khan Mannan Khan for Akola West
  • Heera Devasi for Colaba
  • Chetan Narote for Solapur City Central
  • Madhurimaraje Malojiraje for Kolhapur North

Maharashtra Elections Timeline

Maharashtra will hold its Assembly elections in a single phase on November 20, with vote counting scheduled for November 23. The ruling BJP aims to retain power alongside allies Shiv Sena (led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde) and the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In the 2019 elections, the BJP secured 105 seats, Shiv Sena 56, and Congress 44 seats. In 2014, BJP had a stronger foothold with 122 seats, Shiv Sena 63, and Congress 42 seats.

Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024

Jharkhand will conduct its Assembly elections in two phases on November 13 and November 20, with counting on November 23. Approximately 2.60 crore electors, including 11.84 lakh first-time voters and special provisions for persons with disabilities, third-gender individuals, and senior citizens over 85, will participate. The state’s political landscape is competitive, with the BJP eyeing a comeback after losing to the JMM-led alliance in 2019. In that election, the JMM-Congress-RJD coalition claimed 47 seats—JMM with 30, Congress 16, and RJD one—ousting the BJP, which managed 25 seats.
