In a bold move ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the Congress party unveiled its ambitious ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’ on Wednesday. The scheme promises health insurance coverage of ₹25 lakh for residents of Delhi if the party is voted into power.
This announcement marks the second major promise from the Congress in its bid to woo Delhi voters. Earlier, on January 6, the party introduced the ‘Pyaari Didi Yojana,’ pledging ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance for women in the capital. The Congress has assured voters that both schemes will feature prominently in its governance plan if it forms the next government.
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who spearheaded a similar initiative in his state, highlighted the transformative potential of the scheme. “Delhi Congress has decided to include ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’ in its manifesto. This scheme will provide ₹25 lakh health insurance, modeled after Rajasthan’s Chiranjeevi Yojana, which revolutionized healthcare access in the state,” Gehlot stated during the launch event.
He emphasized that the scheme’s inclusive nature, akin to the ‘Right to Health’ Act implemented in Rajasthan, ensures healthcare access without restrictive conditions. “This scheme will be a game changer for Delhi,” Gehlot added, urging Congress workers to educate the public about its benefits.
Congress’s Delhi election in-charge, Devendra Yadav, criticized past collaborations with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and assured voters of the party’s renewed focus. “The agreement with AAP in the Lok Sabha elections was a mistake. Delhi’s voters are now looking to the Congress as an alternative,” Yadav said.
As the electoral battle heats up, the Congress’s focus on healthcare and women’s empowerment may redefine the contours of the Delhi elections, potentially challenging the ruling AAP and other contenders.
