In a dramatic turn of events, Sanjay Roy, convicted for the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, vehemently denied the charges against him in court on Monday. Roy, who was found guilty on Saturday, January 18, 2025, claimed that he had been wrongly convicted and was a victim of framing.

“I am being framed, and I have not committed any crime. I have not done anything and still, I have been held guilty,” Roy told the court ahead of his sentencing in the case.

Roy was convicted by Judge Anirban Das of the Additional District and Sessions Court under sections 64 (rape), 66 (causing death or persistent vegetative state), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The horrific crime took place in August 2024 and led to widespread outrage across the country.

During the court proceedings, the CBI lawyer urged the court to impose the highest penalty on Roy. “We pray for the highest penalty to maintain people’s faith in society,” the CBI counsel stated.
