In a significant loss to Indian politics, CPI(M) leader and General Secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72 on Thursday, September 12, following a prolonged illness. Yechury, who was undergoing treatment for an acute respiratory tract infection at AIIMS in Delhi, was admitted to the ICU on August 19 due to a pneumonia-like chest infection.

The CPI(M) had issued a statement on September 10, informing the public about Yechury’s deteriorating health condition. His passing marks the end of an era for the Left in Indian politics, where he had been a prominent figure since his student days.

Sitaram Yechury took over the reins of the CPI(M) as General Secretary in 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat. His leadership style, marked by intellectual rigor and a deep understanding of grassroots issues, helped the party remain a significant voice in the political discourse.

In a heartfelt tribute, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, described Yechury as “a friend” and “a protector of the Idea of India with a deep understanding of our country.” Gandhi expressed his sorrow, stating, “Deeply saddened by veteran CPI-M leader, Sitaram Yechury Ji’s passing. He was a stalwart who rose from the ranks to become one of the most respected voices in Indian politics. He was known for his intellectual take on issues and connection with the people at the grassroots level.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also mourned Yechury’s passing, acknowledging his role in shaping political discourse in India. “His insightful debates with leaders across the political spectrum earned him recognition beyond his party. My heartfelt condolences to his family, comrades, and followers. May his soul rest in peace,” Naidu posted.

Yechury’s legacy will be remembered for his contributions to Indian politics, particularly in upholding the values of the Left and his tireless work in connecting with the common people. His passing leaves a void in the CPI(M) and in the broader political landscape of India.
