Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to meet Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena on Tuesday at 4:30 PM, where he is expected to tender his resignation. This development was confirmed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Press Trust of India (PTI), stating that Kejriwal has sought an appointment with the L-G. According to the PTI report, the L-G has granted him a meeting at the specified time.
The news comes on the heels of Kejriwal’s public announcement on Sunday, where he addressed his party workers and declared his intention to step down. “I am going to resign after two days; ask people whether I am honest; till they respond, I won’t sit on the CM’s chair,” the 54-year-old leader stated. Kejriwal emphasized that he would only return to the Chief Minister’s chair after receiving a “certificate of honesty” from the people, adding that he wished to undergo an ‘agnipariksha’ (trial by fire) after his recent release from jail.
Kejriwal’s dramatic announcement follows his release from Tihar Jail after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case linked to the Delhi excise policy. The case, filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has been a focal point of controversy and political strife in recent months. Despite the legal challenges and accusations levied against him, Kejriwal remains adamant about his integrity and has voiced his desire to gain public trust before reclaiming his position.
“Despite what the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has done in the past two years, the Chief Minister still has faith in people and his honesty… The people of Delhi are eager for elections to be held so that they can vote and make Arvind Kejriwal the Chief Minister again,” an AAP leader remarked. This statement reflects the party’s confidence that Kejriwal will be reinstated as Chief Minister through public support and an upcoming electoral mandate.
The political landscape in Delhi has been tense since Kejriwal’s arrest and subsequent release, with the AAP accusing the BJP of orchestrating political vendettas. Kejriwal’s meeting with the L-G and the anticipated resignation mark a significant turning point, as the capital gears up for what could be a tumultuous political battle ahead. The public’s response and the political maneuvers in the coming days will play a crucial role in determining Delhi’s immediate future and Kejriwal’s political trajectory.
