Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday, alleging that the constitutional body is failing to perform its duties independently. Speaking to the media in Delhi, Gandhi said, "The Election Commission is not functioning as the Election Commission of India. Today, they made some statements – this is complete nonsense."
Though he did not specify which statements he was referring to, the Congress leader’s sharp remarks come amid growing concerns among opposition parties over the neutrality and credibility of the Election Commission ahead of key state assembly elections and the 2026 Rajya Sabha polls.
Gandhi accused the ECI of acting under pressure from the central government, stating, “Institutions that are meant to safeguard democracy are being misused. This is not about one party or one election — this is about the very idea of free and fair elections in India.”
