In a significant political development, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is poised to serve as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister for the third time, according to a report by Dainik Bhaskar on Monday. The arrangement is reportedly part of a power-sharing formula agreed upon between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), with backing from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Power-Sharing Formula Finalized

Sources within the RSS revealed that Fadnavis will lead the state for the first 2.5 years of the term, following which Eknath Shinde, leader of the Shiv Sena Legislature Party, will assume the Chief Minister’s office. This decision was reportedly made after discussions involving RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and senior BJP leadership.

Fadnavis to be Elevated as BJP National President

Once Fadnavis relinquishes the CM post, he is expected to be appointed the BJP’s national president, according to the report. The decision reflects the BJP’s trust in his leadership skills and ability to maintain coordination between the party and the RSS.

If Fadnavis transitions to the central leadership before completing his tenure, names like BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde or former state president Chandrakant Patil are being considered to step in as interim Chief Minister, the report suggests.

Despite the transition plan, it is emphasized that Shinde will not assume the Chief Minister’s position before the agreed timeline of 2.5 years.

Shinde’s Leadership Lauded

On Sunday, Shinde was unanimously elected as the leader of the Shiv Sena Legislature Party in a meeting attended by all 57 MLA-designates at a suburban hotel in Mumbai. Several resolutions were passed during the meeting, including one commending Shinde for his leadership during the party’s electoral success, and others expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the people of Maharashtra for their support to the Mahayuti alliance.

Maharashtra’s Political Landscape

The term of the current Maharashtra Assembly ends on November 26, necessitating the formation of a government to avoid the imposition of President’s Rule.

A new governance framework has also been devised, which includes one Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers. Ministerial portfolios will be allocated based on the strength of MLAs, with BJP projected to receive 22-24 positions, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) 10-12, and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) 8-10.

Fadnavis: A Proven Leader

Fadnavis secured his fourth consecutive victory from Nagpur South-West in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, defeating Congress candidate Praful Gudhe. His prior tenure as Chief Minister is noted for stability and efficiency, making him a natural choice to lead the state once again.

Swearing-In Ceremony Imminent

The official announcement of Fadnavis as the Chief Minister is expected this week, with the swearing-in ceremony likely to follow shortly after. This marks a critical step in solidifying the power-sharing arrangement and setting the stage for Maharashtra’s governance for the coming term.
