Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is set to take on a new role as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) national president, according to Free Press Journal (FPJ) sources. This transition might lead to his resignation from the Deputy Chief Minister position in the coming weeks, with a move to New Delhi on the horizon. The announcement was made to senior party leaders on Wednesday.
Recently, in New Delhi, after the NITI Aayog meeting with state chief ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a session with all BJP chief ministers at the party headquarters. Following this, PM Modi had a private meeting with Fadnavis.
In an interesting turn, Fadnavis’s family was later seen posing for photos with the Prime Minister. BJP insiders told FPJ that during this meeting, the topic of Fadnavis’s transition to the national president role was discussed. Party opinions on this matter were then considered over the following days.
The speculation about the new BJP president has been rife since Union Minister J.P. Nadda’s term ended a few weeks ago. The party is now debating who will spearhead the BJP during the upcoming assembly elections. One theory is that Fadnavis will stay in Maharashtra until after the elections before heading to New Delhi.
However, recent updates from New Delhi hint at an expedited timeline, with Fadnavis possibly moving sooner than expected. One potential candidate for his replacement in Maharashtra is BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde, though this has not been officially confirmed by party sources.
