In a significant move to accommodate the surge in passenger demand during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja celebrations, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday that Indian Railways will operate 7,000 special trains this festive season. This decision is aimed at facilitating approximately two lakh additional passengers daily, ensuring smoother travel for millions celebrating these important festivals.
Officials from Indian Railways revealed that 4,500 special trains were run last year during Diwali and Chhath Puja to handle the festive rush. The Northern Railway (NR) has taken the lead, announcing the operation of around 3,050 special train trips. This initiative is particularly focused on aiding travelers heading to eastern regions of the country, where many will return home to celebrate with family. The NR noted that the increase represents a substantial rise from last year, where only 1,082 special trips were made .
“Apart from sins, extra coaches are being augmented in regular trains to generate more capacity for travel,” a railway official stated, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring that all passengers can secure a seat during this peak travel period .
