A disagreement over Diwali decorations has led to allegations of communal tension in Panchanand Society, located in Taloja Sector 9, Navi Mumbai. Viral videos of the incident capture a heated exchange between residents, reportedly after some Muslim residents raised objections to decorative lights placed in common areas for Diwali celebrations.

In the videos, members of both communities are seen arguing, with offensive language used on both sides. At one point, a man can be heard yelling, “Light nahi jalegi, Diya nahi jalega” (“Lights won’t be put up in the society, and no diyas will be lit”), further intensifying the dispute.

According to reports, tensions have been simmering since June over an incident prior to Bakri Eid, when Hindu residents objected to Muslim residents bringing goats into the society premises for ritual sacrifices. Following this, society members reportedly agreed on a resolution prohibiting religious or cultural activities in common areas to prevent conflicts. Muslim residents are now invoking that resolution, arguing it should apply equally to Diwali decorations and lighting displays in shared spaces.

The confrontation has prompted both communities to press society office bearers to enforce the June 2024 agreement, which was intended to uphold communal harmony. The incident has attracted significant attention on social media, with many expressing concerns over the potential for escalating tensions.

Residents are reportedly seeking ways to resolve the issue respectfully, ensuring that cultural practices can continue without infringing on shared spaces. No legal action has been taken in connection with the incident.
