US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a bold move to impose a 100% tariff on all films produced outside the United States, claiming that the American movie industry has been “stolen” by foreign countries. Speaking on Truth Social, Trump said, “Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.’ California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit!”
Trump added that this action aims to address a “long time, never-ending problem” and would safeguard domestic filmmaking. The announcement comes after Trump first floated the idea in May, though details about which countries would be affected were not clarified.
