Early Monsoon Showers Bring Waterlogging Chaos To Mumbai’s Highways And Roads

The IMD has issued advisories for fishermen, warning them not to venture along and off the North and South Maharashtra coasts from June 9 to June 13 due to expected squally weather.

Parts of Mumbai faced significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions after heavy rains accompanied by thunder lashed the city on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more intense showers with gusty winds reaching speeds of 62-87 kmph over isolated parts of the metropolitan area.

“Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and heavy spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 62-87 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad during the next 3-4 hours,” the IMD stated in a post on X.

Impact on Traffic and Waterlogging

Visuals captured from various parts of the city show vehicles struggling to navigate waterlogged roads after the downpour on Sunday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the city recorded 55-77 millimeters of rainfall within an hour, from 11 pm to midnight. The eastern suburbs saw 28-40 millimeters of rain, while the western suburbs recorded 48-77 millimeters during the same period.

Warnings and Advisories

The IMD has issued advisories for fishermen, warning them not to venture along and off the North and South Maharashtra coasts from June 9 to June 13 due to expected squally weather. “Squally weather with wind speed 45 kmph to 55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely to prevail along and off North Maharashtra coast from June 9 to June 13. Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off the North Maharashtra coast during the above-mentioned period,” the IMD bulletin stated.
