The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday dismissed claims made by the Congress party regarding “arbitrary deletion and addition of voters” in the recently concluded Maharashtra assembly elections. The Congress had raised concerns about the alleged removal of voters and the addition of over 10,000 new voters in each constituency, questioning the authenticity of the final voter lists.

In a statement issued in response to Congress’s allegations, the EC clarified that there had been no “arbitrary additions or deletions” of voters. The poll body also addressed Congress’s concerns regarding an “inexplicable increase in voting percentages” from 5 pm to the final figures announced at 11:30 pm on the day of polling. The EC explained that comparing the 5 pm data with the final turnout was not an accurate representation of voter participation, emphasizing that the counting process and final tally follow standard protocols.

The Election Commission assured that the process of preparing electoral rolls had been transparent and inclusive. Congress representatives had been actively involved in the preparation of the voter lists, ensuring that due process was followed. Furthermore, the ECI pointed out that all relevant data, including details of electors in each constituency and Form 20, was available on the CEO Maharashtra’s official website, where it can be accessed and downloaded.

Addressing the allegations, the EC reiterated its commitment to transparency and collaboration with all political parties involved in the election process. The poll body welcomed constructive suggestions and emphasized that its operations were meticulous and in line with established protocols.
