Caretaker Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, fell ill during a visit to his hometown of Satara, sparking speculation as the Mahayuti alliance deliberates on the next Chief Minister. Shinde, who has been battling fever, cold, and a throat infection for two days, is currently under medical observation at his residence.
Dr. RM Patre, Shinde’s family doctor, confirmed that he has been administered antibiotics and saline to aid his recovery. “He is doing fine now. These are the side effects of the fever, but he is under observation by a team of 3–4 doctors,” Dr. Patre said, adding that Shinde is expected to recover within a couple of days.
Health Concerns Amid Political Uncertainty
Shinde’s sudden return to Satara and the cancellation of a key meeting of the Mahayuti alliance added fuel to speculation that his illness may be linked to frustration over the prolonged discussions on the Chief Ministerial post and cabinet portfolios. However, allies, including members of the Shiv Sena faction and BJP leaders, dismissed such claims.
Outgoing minister Uday Samant clarified, “He isn’t upset. He is unwell. It’s unfair to say he went home because he was upset. He has always prioritized the welfare and development of Maharashtra.”
Mahayuti Alliance Moves Forward
Despite Shinde’s health concerns, the Mahayuti alliance appears to be progressing towards forming the next government. BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule confirmed that the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for December 5 at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend.
NCP leader Ajit Pawar, addressing ongoing questions about power distribution, stated that the Chief Minister’s post will be held by the BJP, while the Deputy Chief Minister positions will be shared between Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction and the NCP faction led by Pawar himself.
Focus on Maharashtra’s Development
The Mahayuti alliance, which emerged victorious in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, faces the challenge of balancing power among its constituent parties. While Shinde’s health has momentarily diverted attention, his supporters emphasize his commitment to Maharashtra’s welfare.
The upcoming swearing-in ceremony marks a pivotal moment in Maharashtra’s political landscape, with the dynamics within the alliance under intense scrutiny. As the state awaits formal announcements, the focus remains on ensuring stability and progress for Maharashtra under the new government.
