The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has launched a series of impactful welfare schemes aimed at empowering women and ensuring their safety under the Department of Women and Child Development. These initiatives have played a crucial role in bolstering women’s security and fostering empowerment across the state. Key programs include the Chief Minister Kanya Sumangala Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Uttar Pradesh Rani Laxmi Bai Women and Children Samman Kosh, 181 Women Helpline, Mahila Shakti Kendra Scheme, government-operated women’s shelters, legal aid for dowry victims, and hostels for working women.

Key Welfare Schemes

Chief Minister Kanya Sumangala Yojana
Introduced in 2019, this scheme provides financial assistance to families with girl children, promoting a positive attitude toward their welfare. The funds are transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts through PFMS. Families in Uttar Pradesh with an annual income of up to ₹3 lakh and a permanent residence certificate are eligible for this scheme.

181 Women Helpline
This helpline offers round-the-clock toll-free support to women experiencing violence. It provides immediate assistance, information, and emergency interventions, including ambulance services and access to protection officers.

Mahila Shakti Kendra Scheme
This initiative raises awareness on issues like domestic violence, dowry, education, health rights, and gender equality. It connects rural women and adolescent girls with government schemes and supports the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. The program is active in 71 districts approved by the Centre.

Government Women’s Refuge/Protection Homes
Operational in 12 districts, including Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur, and Agra, these shelters provide safe housing, free food, healthcare, education, clothing, and skill development training to women in need.

Legal Aid for Dowry Victims
Women abandoned or suffering due to dowry can avail themselves of legal aid worth ₹2,500 for case prosecution. This assistance is approved by the District Magistrate and is available to women living below the poverty line with no independent means of income.

Holistic Support for Vulnerable Women

The Uttar Pradesh government also runs programs tailored for elderly, destitute women and those impacted by dowry violence. Secure shelters offer free food, clothing, and medical care, ensuring a dignified life for those in need.
