Maharashtra’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), S Chockalingam, has issued a stern warning, cautioning individuals against spreading unfounded allegations of tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The statement comes amidst ongoing controversies fueled by opposition leaders from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over the integrity of the recent Maharashtra assembly elections.

Strict Action on False Claims

Speaking on Sunday, Chockalingam declared that any attempt to sensationalize or propagate baseless claims would face strict legal consequences. He emphasized the seriousness of such actions, stating, “Authorities are committed to investigating these allegations, and those responsible for misleading the public or disrupting the electoral process will not be spared.”

The Election Commission has already filed an FIR against Syed Shuja, an individual residing abroad, who is accused of making false claims regarding EVM tampering. The commission has reportedly initiated communication with international authorities to pursue the matter further.

Active Investigations Underway

Delhi and Mumbai Police are working to identify individuals in India who may have connections with such entities. “This is a grave offence. Anyone found guilty of involvement will face strict action,” the CEO added.

Political Allegations Over EVM Reliability

The controversy was reignited when Jayant Patil, Maharashtra NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) chief, raised concerns about voter turnout patterns and the reliability of EVMs. He cited an increase in voter turnout after 5 PM during the elections and questioned the transparency of the voting process.

“The EVM acts like a simple calculator, but it magically increases votes at night. This raises serious concerns about the integrity of the process,” Patil stated. He also demanded a return to ballot papers, asserting that such a move would help restore public trust.

Setbacks for MVA and Victory for Mahayuti

The recently concluded elections were a major setback for the MVA alliance, with Congress winning just 16 out of 288 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) securing 20 seats, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) managing only 10. In contrast, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance clinched a significant victory, winning 132 seats. The Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the NCP faction under Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar added 57 and 41 seats, respectively, to the coalition’s tally.

Call for Electoral Reforms

Patil’s statements echo a growing call among opposition leaders to reevaluate the use of EVMs. “Ballot papers should replace EVMs to ensure transparency and trust in the system,” he added.

The Election Commission’s firm stance against allegations signals a proactive approach to safeguarding electoral integrity, but the ongoing debate reflects broader concerns about trust in the democratic process.
