Fact Check: Is There A Penalty For Riding A  Bike Or Driving A Car In Slippers?

While there may not be a fine, experts advise against driving or riding in slippers for safety reasons. Wearing proper shoes ensures a better grip on the brake pedal, reducing the risk of accidents.

In India, there are several rules that drivers and riders must follow while operating a vehicle, whether it’s a bike or a car. In 2019, the central government introduced changes to the Motor Vehicles Act, which included several important regulations. Among the most crucial rules is that both the rider and the pillion passenger on a bike must wear helmets.

However, a common belief among many is that driving a bike or a car while wearing slippers or flip-flops could result in a fine. But is this true? Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently clarified this on social media.

No Fine for Wearing Slippers While Riding a Bike

Nitin Gadkari stated that there is no provision in the Motor Vehicles Act that imposes a fine for riding a bike or driving a car while wearing slippers or flip-flops. The minister emphasized that such a rule does not exist, and therefore, no fine is imposed for it. Gadkari’s post on social media also mentioned that wearing slippers, half-sleeve shirts, lungis, or driving a vehicle with a damaged mirror or without an extra bulb does not attract any fines. He urged people to be cautious of such rumors.

Safety Concerns

While there may not be a fine, experts advise against driving or riding in slippers for safety reasons. Wearing proper shoes ensures a better grip on the brake pedal, reducing the risk of accidents. Slippers, on the other hand, can easily slip off the foot, increasing the chances of an accident.

In conclusion, while there is no legal penalty for driving or riding in slippers, it’s always safer to wear proper footwear to avoid any potential accidents.
