In a chaotic turn of events, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) meeting erupted into a physical altercation on Tuesday, as Congress and BJP councillors clashed over Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The incident, which occurred during a scheduled meeting, was triggered by a motion proposed by Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors, who have allied nationally. The motion demanded Shah’s resignation following his statements during the Constitution debate in the Rajya Sabha last week.

The heated debate quickly escalated into a scuffle, as councillors from both Congress and BJP exchanged blows. A video of the brawl has since surfaced on social media, showing the councillors physically clashing while CCTV cameras in the meeting room captured the entire incident. Some of the councillors appeared to notice the cameras but remained undeterred, continuing their altercation in front of them.

The row began when Congress and AAP members moved the motion condemning Shah’s remarks on Dr. Ambedkar, one of India’s most revered leaders and the architect of the Constitution. The motion called for the Home Minister’s resignation, citing his controversial comments as an affront to Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.

The scuffle marks yet another instance of growing political tensions within municipal bodies across India, where local-level disagreements sometimes escalate into violent confrontations. The incident at the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation meeting highlights the divisive nature of national politics spilling over into local governance, leaving many questioning the decorum of elected representatives.
