On Thursday, a series of devastating cloudbursts struck the districts of Mandi, Shimla, and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh, leaving around 50 people missing and resulting in the recovery of two bodies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, anticipating more heavy rainfall on Friday.
Flash Flood Warning Issued
The IMD has sounded a flash flood warning for six districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Chamba, and Sirmaur. The additional chief secretary of Himachal Pradesh, Onkar Chand Sharma, confirmed that a heavy rain alert is in place until August 2, with further updates to be issued as new data becomes available.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reassured the public that the Union home minister has pledged all possible assistance. Two additional National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are being dispatched to aid in the rescue efforts. CM Sukhu also noted that BJP chief J.P. Nadda has been in frequent contact, offering support, and that he has spoken with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

Army Mobilizes for Rescue Operations
In response to the disaster, the Indian Army has mobilized significant resources for rescue and relief operations. Three columns, totaling 125 personnel, have been deployed, alongside an Engineer Task Force and a Medical Team comprising 20 personnel. These teams are actively working at the cloudburst site in Shimla district to provide immediate assistance and support to the affected communities.
