In a tragic and gruesome incident that has left the state of Maharashtra in shock, a Class 12 student was brutally murdered by a classmate on the campus of Tuljaram Chaturchand College in Baramati. The crime occurred on Monday around 11:30 a.m. following a heated argument between the two students, both of whom are minors, according to reports.
The altercation quickly escalated, leading the accused to attack the victim with a sharp weapon, identified as a koyta (a type of sickle). Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the victim was declared dead upon arrival by doctors. Local police immediately responded to the scene, apprehending the attacker. Reports also suggest that a second classmate was involved in the attack and has been arrested as well.
The horrifying crime has sparked widespread outrage across Maharashtra, with public figures condemning the incident and raising concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation. Supriya Sule, the Member of Parliament from Baramati and a prominent leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), took to social media to express her anger and frustration.
“A youth was killed in broad daylight in the Baramati college. It is shocking and unfortunate. The law and order situation is deteriorating day by day, and criminals are left with no fear,” Sule posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Sule also criticized the state government, particularly Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, for failing to control the rising crime rate in the state. “Incidents of people roaming around with swords, koytas, or pistols have increased. The Gundaraj (lawlessness) in Maharashtra has worsened because of the failure of Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, taking our state years back,” she added.
As the investigation continues, the crime has fueled debates on public safety, the increasing involvement of minors in violent acts, and the accessibility of dangerous weapons in the state.
Authorities have promised a thorough investigation, and further details are awaited.
