How Pakistan's 200 Inmates Escaped: 'Karachi Jailbreak' Triggers Massive Manhunt

In a dramatic security breach that has shaken Pakistan’s largest city, over 200 inmates — including several hardened criminals — escaped from Karachi's high-security Malir jail on Monday night, following widespread chaos triggered by an earthquake.

The jailbreak, described by officials as one of the most serious lapses in recent prison history, unfolded after tremors caused panic within the facility. Amid emergency procedures to move prisoners out of their barracks, an estimated 700–1,000 inmates were temporarily assembled near the jail’s main gate. Taking advantage of the confusion, more than 200 prisoners reportedly forced open the gate and fled.

“Criminals took advantage of the momentary chaos and overpowered the guards,” confirmed Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, adding, “They did not break the wall, but the main gate. The wall only had cracks due to the tremors.”

The situation quickly spiraled into violence, with inmates seizing weapons and engaging in a firefight with jail authorities. One prisoner was killed, and several others were injured. Among the wounded were three Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and a jail guard, who sustained serious injuries in the crossfire.

As social media lit up with videos of escaped inmates roaming Karachi’s streets — some brazenly shouting they had served nearly 28 years in jail — the city was placed on high alert. Panic spread among residents as law enforcement scrambled to contain the situation.

A swift response followed. Police, Rangers, FC, Special Security Unit (SSU), and Rapid Response Force (RRF) launched an intensive manhunt. By Tuesday morning, 75 escapees were recaptured, while efforts to track down the remaining fugitives continue. Checkpoints were established city-wide, surveillance was ramped up, and traffic movement was restricted near the National Highway.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah was briefed on the situation and has directed authorities to take strict preventive measures. “An in-depth investigation is underway,” officials said. Jail staff suspected of negligence will face strict disciplinary action.
