IMD Issues Orange Alert For Heavy Rainfall Across Mumbai, Thane And Maharashtra; NDMA Urges Caution

The IMD and local authorities have urged residents to stay updated on weather forecasts and follow safety advisories to minimize risks during this period of heavy rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, signaling the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and several other districts in Maharashtra starting Saturday. This warning has been prompted by the formation of two low-pressure systems—one over West Bengal and Jharkhand, and another over the Arabian Sea—that are expected to bring widespread rainfall to the state.

Residents of Mumbai, Raigad, and Ratnagiri should prepare for potentially severe weather conditions, with forecasts indicating significant rainfall from August 24 onwards. The IMD has warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas and disruptions to daily life, urging citizens to exercise caution.

The IMD’s orange alert also extends to districts like Pune, Satara, and parts of Vidarbha, where rainfall could exceed 64.5 mm in a 24-hour period. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for moderate rain and thunderstorms across other parts of the state, except for certain districts in western Maharashtra and Marathwada.

In light of the forecast, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has sent SMS alerts to Mumbai residents, advising them to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. The IMD’s warnings highlight the potential impact of the low-pressure systems, with rain expected to continue across the state over the next 48 hours. Orange alerts remain in place for Konkan and western Maharashtra on August 25 and 26, as the state braces for the impending downpours.

The IMD and local authorities have urged residents to stay updated on weather forecasts and follow safety advisories to minimize risks during this period of heavy rainfall.
