The Election Commission (EC) announced on Wednesday that the number of registered voters in India has surged to 99.1 crore, marking a significant increase from the 96.88 crore recorded during the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. This milestone highlights India’s rapidly growing electorate as the country moves closer to becoming a nation of one billion voters.

The announcement was made ahead of National Voters’ Day, celebrated annually on January 25 to commemorate the establishment of the Election Commission on the same day in 1950. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “We are crossing 99 crore voters and are on the verge of becoming a nation of one billion voters, which will be a historic record.”

The EC also highlighted improvements in the inclusivity and balance of the electoral rolls. The updated rolls now feature 21.7 crore voters in the 18-29 age group, showcasing the engagement of India’s youth in the democratic process. Additionally, the electoral gender ratio has improved from 948 in 2024 to 954 in 2025, reflecting a greater participation of women in the electoral process.

As part of its efforts to ensure free and fair elections, the Election Commission released the updated electoral rolls on January 6, ahead of the Delhi Assembly polls and other upcoming elections. The EC also stressed its commitment to promoting voter awareness and participation, especially among first-time voters and marginalized communities.

The approaching milestone of one billion voters underscores the scale and complexity of India’s electoral system, which is the largest in the world. As the nation prepares for future elections, this achievement reaffirms the strength of its democracy and the growing enthusiasm among citizens to participate in shaping the country’s governance.
