In a significant development, India has reported its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) after an eight-month-old baby tested positive for the virus in Bengaluru. According to reports by News18, the child is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital and has no travel history.
The Karnataka state health department has reportedly confirmed the case, with health officials stating that tests conducted on the baby returned positive for HMPV.
What is HMPV?
HMPV is a respiratory virus that can cause mild cold-like symptoms in healthy individuals but poses a higher risk for infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. It is known to spread through respiratory droplets and close contact, with symptoms ranging from fever, cough, and nasal congestion to severe respiratory distress in vulnerable individuals.
Global Concerns as China Battles HMPV Surge
The news comes amidst a surge in HMPV cases in China, where hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed with patients suffering from various respiratory infections, including influenza, COVID-19, HMPV, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Despite the alarming situation, Chinese authorities have downplayed concerns, terming it an "annual seasonal recurrence."
?Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season in the northern hemisphere,? stated Mao Ning, spokesperson for China?s foreign ministry.
Social media platforms are flooded with videos showing packed hospitals and citizens expressing concern over the rising infections. However, Chinese authorities attribute the surge to common seasonal pathogens, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and HMPV.
