Russian President Vladimir Putin, on his first visit to India in four years, joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a joint press briefing on Friday after high-level bilateral talks at Hyderabad House, New Delhi. The two leaders reaffirmed their strategic partnership across energy, trade and global security, setting a strong tone for the future of India–Russia relations.
During the briefing, President Putin delivered a key assurance on India’s energy security, declaring:
“Russia will ensure uninterrupted shipments of fuel to India.”
The statement comes amid mounting pressure from Western nations urging India to reduce oil imports from Moscow. Putin emphasised that Russia remains a committed partner, saying Russia is a “reliable supplier of oil, gas, coal and essential resources for India’s energy growth.”
Prime Minister Modi, meanwhile, placed strong emphasis on joint action against cross-border terrorism.
He said India and Russia have always stood “shoulder to shoulder in the fight against terrorism,” reminding that attacks like the Pahalgam terror strike and the Crocus City Hall massacre “have the same roots”.
Modi said global unity against terrorism is essential, adding that India and Russia coordinate deeply across the UN, G20, BRICS, SCO and other global platforms.
On trade, Putin highlighted record growth in bilateral commerce:
-
India–Russia trade touched $64 billion last year, a 12% increase, setting a historic high.
-
He said the same levels are expected this year and expressed confidence that bilateral trade will rise to $100 billion soon.
