India has once again called for the release of all Indian nationals serving in the Russian military following the death of another citizen on the frontlines of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The death brings the total number of Indian fatalities in the Russian military to 10.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Tuesday that an Indian national from Kerala, Binil Babu (31), was killed while fighting with Ukrainian forces. Another individual from the same state was reported injured. However, the ministry refrained from providing further details on the circumstances surrounding Babu's death. Reports indicated that he hailed from Kuttanellur in Thrissur district.
India has been consistently raising the issue of Indian nationals, primarily recruited as support staff like cooks and helpers, serving with Russian military units. Following the deaths of at least nine Indians, this has become a significant concern for New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin in two meetings last year, urging for the release of these individuals.
"We have learned of the unfortunate death of an Indian national from Kerala, who had apparently been recruited to serve in the Russian Army," said Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. "Another Indian national from Kerala, who was similarly recruited, has been injured and is receiving treatment in a hospital in Moscow," he added.
Jaiswal confirmed that the Indian government has strongly raised the issue with Russian authorities in Moscow as well as with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. "We have also reiterated our demand for the early discharge of the remaining Indian nationals," he said, although he did not provide specifics on how many Indians are currently serving with the Russian military.
