In the historic Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections 2024, the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance is poised for a sweeping victory, securing a lead of over 50 seats as per the latest results. This marks the first election in the region in a decade and the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trailing behind, holding over 27 seats according to early leads.

The election results are being closely watched as this marks a significant political event in the Union Territory, which was previously divided into Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh following the 2019 constitutional changes. Heavy security arrangements were in place as the vote counting began early this morning at 8 a.m.

The assembly elections, spread across 90 constituencies, were held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, witnessing a voter turnout of 63.88%, as reported by the Election Commission of India.

The Congress-NC alliance, formed specifically for these elections, is demonstrating a strong lead, while the BJP, which contested separately along with Mehbooba Mufti's People's Democratic Party (PDP), is trailing. The PDP-BJP alliance had previously collapsed in June 2018 when BJP withdrew its support from the coalition, leading to Governor?s Rule being imposed in the region.

With the results expected to be officially declared by the end of today, the Congress-NC coalition appears to have a commanding lead in what has been a significant and closely watched election.
