Security forces neutralized two terrorists in an intense overnight encounter in the Sopore area of Baramulla district on Friday. The operation, which began on Thursday evening in Sagipora following intelligence on the presence of armed militants, concluded with the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and other incriminating materials, according to the Kashmir Zone Police. Authorities are working to verify the identities and affiliations of the deceased.
The operation initially launched as a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) evolved into a heavy exchange of fire early Friday as forces continued to pursue the remaining threats. Officials confirmed that a group of two to three militants was believed to be trapped in the area, and further clearance activities are underway.
This encounter follows a string of violent incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, including a recent attack on Thursday in Kishtwar district that left two members of a Village Defence Committee (VDC), Kuldeep Kumar and Nazeer Ahmed Padder, dead. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the VDC attack, pledging “relentless action” against terror groups and expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for reinforced security measures to prevent such attacks. “These acts of violence highlight the urgent need for additional safeguards for vulnerable communities,” Abdullah stated, offering condolences to the families of the deceased.
The ongoing crackdown by security forces underscores an intensified push to counter rising violence across the region. Over the last 48 hours alone, additional encounters resulted in the elimination of two terrorists in separate incidents in Kupwara’s Lolab area and Bandipora’s Ketsun forests.
October saw a surge in violence, including an October 20 assault in Ganderbal district’s Gagangir area, where seven workers at an infrastructure project camp were killed. Another deadly attack followed on October 24 in Gulmarg’s Botapathri area of Baramulla district, leaving three Army soldiers and two civilian porters dead. This wave of violence, which claimed the lives of nine civilians and three soldiers, has prompted heightened security measures throughout Jammu and Kashmir.
As the security grid in the region continues to be strengthened, officials reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating remaining terror threats and ensuring the safety of residents across the region.
