Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President Kamal Haasan has strongly opposed the Union government’s proposed parliamentary constituency delimitation, warning that it poses a grave threat to India’s federal structure and regional diversity. Speaking at an All-Party Meeting on the issue, Haasan cautioned that the move could pave the way for a homogenized “Hindia”, sidelining non-Hindi-speaking states.
“The issue of parliamentary constituency delimitation based on population is not just a concern for Tamil Nadu but also affects states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Odisha, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeastern states,” Haasan stated, underlining the nationwide impact. He thanked Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin for organizing the crucial meeting and praised regional parties for setting aside ideological differences to join the discussion.
Quoting Thiruvalluvar, Haasan warned of the dangers of inaction: “A person who does not take preventive action in advance will perish like dry grass thrown into the fire.” He stressed that safeguarding democracy and federalism—India’s two guiding principles—was essential to ensuring an inclusive and balanced nation.
Highlighting historical precedence, Haasan reminded the gathering that previous Prime Ministers in 1976 and 2001 had upheld federalism by refraining from redrawing parliamentary constituencies based solely on population. “India’s population has grown from 550 million in 1976 to 1.45 billion today, yet we have functioned effectively with 543 MPs, proving that our current representation is sufficient to uphold democracy and federalism,” he argued.
