Kerala Congress legislator Rahul Mamkootathil has come under renewed scrutiny after an alleged audio recording of his conversation with a woman surfaced online on Saturday, August 23. The four-minute clip, now viral, appears to capture the MLA pressuring the woman to terminate her pregnancy while issuing veiled threats.
In the recording, a man believed to be Mamkootathil warns the woman that he could “kill (her) in seconds” if she resisted. He allegedly insists that carrying the pregnancy forward would “destroy” his life and urges her to comply with an abortion. At one point, he is heard telling her: “You can’t face it alone. I don’t know the consequences when I get angry.”
The woman, however, pushes back, saying she would raise the child on her own. She also accuses him of being capable of harming the baby, to which the MLA reportedly responds that he has never insulted her and attempts to portray himself as concerned: “Till this moment, I haven’t called you a bad word… I will never do anything wrong to you.”
The authenticity of the audio has not been independently verified.
This controversy adds to a string of allegations of sexual misconduct against the 38-year-old legislator. Earlier, Malayalam actor Rini George accused a senior Congress youth leader of harassment in an interview—claims later linked to Mamkootathil by rivals. Subsequently, writer Honey Bhaskaran and trans activist Avanthika also levelled similar accusations.
Amid mounting pressure, Mamkootathil stepped down from his organisational roles in the Congress on August 21, including his position as Kerala Youth Congress President. In his resignation note, he stressed that the decision was voluntary and not compelled by party leadership.
