A devastating accident involving a BEST air-conditioned electric bus on Route No. A-332 claimed six lives and injured 43 others in Kurla West, Mumbai, on Monday evening, December 9. The incident unfolded on the crowded SG Barve Road market around 9:30 pm, leaving a trail of destruction as the bus plowed through vehicles and pedestrians.

Tragic Sequence of Events

The bus, reportedly driven by Sanjay More, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, careened into the bustling market, smashing into at least 25 vehicles, including a police jeep. Witnesses described the chaotic scene as the driver appeared to laugh while the vehicle barreled 500 meters through the market before halting.

The accident occurred near the L Ward office and Anjuman-e-Islam School. The bus, leased by the Kurla Bus Depot, was en route to Sakinaka at the time of the tragedy. CCTV footage from the site captured harrowing visuals of people running and screaming as they tried to escape the oncoming bus.

Immediate Response

Emergency services, including police and local authorities, responded promptly. Victims were rushed to Bhabha Hospital and nearby clinics. The deceased were identified as Kaniz Fatema Ansari (55), Afreen A. Shaikh (19), Anam Shaikh (18), and Shivam Kashyap (18). Many of the injured remain in critical condition, intensifying the gravity of the situation.

The collision caused significant damage to autorickshaws, motorcycles, cars, and other vehicles in the vicinity.
