Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the new GST reforms that came into effect on Monday, highlighting that they will benefit every section of society while promoting savings and economic growth. In an open letter to the nation, he also extended his greetings on the occasion of Navratri, noting that the festival now coincides with the launch of ‘GST Bachat Utsav’.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the reforms, featuring only two GST slabs of 5% and 18%, will encourage growth, investment, and progress across all states and regions. Essential items such as food, medicines, soap, toothpaste, and insurance will now either be tax-free or fall under the 5% slab, while goods previously taxed at 12% have largely moved to the lower 5% rate.
PM Modi lauded shopkeepers and traders for displaying “then and now” boards showing the difference between pre- and post-reform taxes. He noted that since his government came to power, 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty, forming an aspirational neo-middle class. With the next-generation GST reforms and income tax cuts, people are expected to save ₹2.5 lakh crore, making it easier for them to achieve their aspirations.
Highlighting the benefits for small businesses and entrepreneurs, PM Modi said the reforms will improve Ease of Doing Business and Ease of Compliance, especially for MSMEs. Lower taxes, simplified rules, and reduced prices will lead to better sales, less compliance burden, and expanded opportunities.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister reiterated the vision of achieving a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, emphasizing self-reliance and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. He urged citizens to support products made in India, highlighting the importance of buying Swadeshi goods to promote employment, support artisans, and create opportunities for youth.
“I appeal to our shopkeepers and traders to sell products that are Made in India. Let us proudly say – what we buy is Swadeshi. Let us proudly say – what we sell is Swadeshi,” PM Modi added, reinforcing the message of economic nationalism and local support.
