In a major highlight of the ongoing Winter Session, the Lok Sabha will host a special 10-hour debate on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram on Monday, December 8. The discussion, to be initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to reflect on the cultural, historical, and national significance of the iconic patriotic composition, according to news agency ANI.
Media reports said the event will serve as a moment of collective reflection on the song’s enduring role in India’s freedom struggle and its relevance in shaping contemporary national identity.
A senior MP told news agency that the discussion would be one of the key attractions of the Winter Session, offering lawmakers an opportunity to revisit the values and emotional resonance that Vande Mataram has carried for generations. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to participate in the discussion,” the MP said.
The debate comes after PM Modi, on November 7, launched the year-long nationwide commemoration marking 150 years of Vande Mataram. During the event, the Prime Minister described the iconic phrase as more than just a patriotic chant.
According to Modi, “Vande Mataram is far more than a phrase, it is a mantra, a source of energy, a vision, and a solemn pledge.” He added that the hymn is symbolic of the nation’s sacrifices, spiritual strength, and emotional unity. He emphasised that the song links India’s past to its present and motivates future generations with the belief that no ambition is unattainable.
Calling the collective singing of Vande Mataram one of the most uplifting moments, PM Modi said that the shared emotion of millions echoed a single rhythm of devotion to Maa Bharati. He noted that November 7 holds special importance as it marks 150 years of the timeless composition.
