A group of Muslim women gathered outside the Congress party office in the city on Wednesday, brandishing the party's 'Guarantee card' which promised Rs 1 lakh to households and employment opportunities among other pledges.
The women were seen waiting patiently outside the office with forms in hand, hoping for someone to accept and process their applications, a day after the Samajwadi Party and Congress-led INDIA bloc outperformed the BJP in Uttar Pradesh by winning 43 seats combined against the BJP's 33.
While the Congress secured 99 seats nationally against the BJP's 240, it was the promises made during the Lok Sabha election campaign that drew these women to the party office.
One of the women, Tasleem, showed a reporter from Aaj Tak news channel the guarantee card and claimed it promised Rs 1 lakh to the woman head of each household. However, she said party office staff told her the form required a booth (voting center) number.
Other women present at the site complained that they were not being provided the forms despite waiting for hours outside the office.
This incident comes after reports emerged on June 1 of several burqa-clad women queuing up outside the General Post Office (GPO) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. These women claimed they had come to open India Post Payments Bank accounts after being informed about the Congress party's promise of fast service delivery.
However, the chief postmaster clarified that the women had fallen for rumours, and no money would be distributed through such accounts. Nonetheless, the rush to open accounts continued for several days.
